Legumes are high in protein, which can help regulate blood sugar, improving energy and concentration. Peas, beans and lentils are all legumes! Half a cup of peas or beans provides 8 grams of protein.
Legumes are high in complex carbohydrates, which take the body longer to absorb as sugars, and trigger only a moderate rise in insulin levels. Eating complex carbs helps to stabilize appetite, and results in fewer carbohydrates stored as fat. Half a cup of chickpeas or pinto beans contain 22 grams of carbohydrates.
Legumes are high in soluble fibre, with a half-cup of peas or beans providing 8 grams of total fibre, and chickpeas or pinto beans providing 6 grams of total fibre.
